Alpaca fiber is one of the world's finest animal fibers and prized by clothiers and fashion designers worldwide. Alpacas develop a single coat which lacks "guard hairs", that is found on wool and other animals. Wool has guard hairs (wool itch factor) which are coarser than the soft undercoat which it is designed to protect. Alpaca's single coat is extremely soft which can be worn next to the skin without irritation. Alpaca fibers are semi-hollow; giving Alpaca fiber added insulation value over wool and other fibers. Alpaca's semi-hollow fiber provides a user with more heat retention in cold and cooling dynamics during hot seasons.
